Thesis Proposal Defense is scheduled on November 23, 2007.
Shiyeeet deezizit pansit. I've been working for months and months on this proposal. I've cried over this I kid you not. 50 freakin pages. Without a doubt the longest paper I've written in my whole life. 50 pages just for a proposal! That's longer than some Phd dissertation proposals!
My thesis proposal is entitled Transnational Families and the Social Shaping of Mobile Phone Technology in the Philippines. Basically it's about the functions of the mobile phone in a transnational family and the patterns of use of mobile phones by children of migrant workers. The study also examines how these functions and patterns of use are influenced by mobile phone service providers and how mobile phone service providers are, in turn, influenced by transnational families.
Panelists will be the foremost scholar on mobile phone technology in the Philippines, Dr. Raul Pertierra and International Sociological Association Executive Committee member Dr.Emma Porio. Of course Dr.Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu, my thesis adviser, will be there. Hopefully one of my favorite profs, Dr. Jun Aguilar too. In fairness I can recite facts and statistics off the bat! I can practically recite the whole thing in my sleep! Dyosme naman sinusuka ko na talaga sya.
I personally find it exciting. Wala pa kasing masyadong studies on children of migrant workers and their patterns of communication with their migrant parents. I'll study who owns the mobile phone in the migrant family, how often they text with their parents, what do they text about, etc etc. It'll also be interesting to interview informants from mobile phone service providers like Globe and Smart and see how they're incorporating migrant workers and their families in their decision-making, product design and development process.
It took me months to decide on a topic. Hmm pwedeng separate entry ito ha. My Grad school and thesis experience. Anyway, it took me months to decide what I really want. From the very start I really wanted to work with migrant families. I've worked in the education sector before, ngayon I want to see how it is to work with migrant workers and their families and discover their issues. I love how this topic merges my communications undergrad and my sociology graduate studies.
The other day, it hit me just how UNexciting it is for other people. I was talking to Solvie, my boss in my former office. I had just had lunch with her and my former officemates and was about to leave. "O san ka na after this?" she asks. "Uwi ka na?"
"Mag la library na ulit ko. Kelangan ko pa ayusin bibliography ko."
"Yuuuccckkkk...." was all Solvie could say. Haha. I suppose the prospect of spending an entire afternoon in the library fixing that list of references isn't exactly thrilling. But hey, I gotta do what I gotta do. Tangena yan, if I don't fix my bibliography, at pumalpak palpak ang mga sources ko, I could be accused of plagiarism and be stripped of my MA. Yun talaga, hindi lang Yuuucckkk ang aabutin ko. Que horror. I've heard of one grad student and two undergrads who were charged with that and they were stripped off their diplomas. Nyaaakkk imagine? Magpapakahirap ka ng ganon tapos mawawala lang sayo lahat ng pinaghirapan mo? Tsk tsk. Minsan kasi plagiarism is just about carelessness lang eh. Nakalimutan lang iquote or icite yung sources, plagiarism na.
I'm looking forward to my defense. It would be good to hear the comments of people whose intellect, whose work, and whose passion for what they do I really admire. God knows my thesis can use all the help it can get. In the meantime, I'll have to do preliminary field work na. Yey I'm so excited! I'll be working with Kanlungan and Kapisanan ng mga Kamaganak ng mga Migranteing Manggagawang Pilipino or KAKAMMPI. Kanlungan and KAKAMMPI are both non-government organizations that deal with migrant workers and their families. With Kanlungan, I'll be assigned lang in Quezon City. KAKAMMPI I'll have to go to Tondo. I'll be alone, AS IN WALA AKONG KILALA. Pero sige lang, game na!
Wish me luck!

So, what happened to your thesis project? Well, working with thesis project can really be hard, but it shouldn’t be an obstacle to complete your study. Anyway, I do hope everything went well with your journey. And I hope I can read your thesis.
